Lunar Coven (Cresselia ex) – Pokémon TCG Pocket Deck Tech

Welcome to another Pokémon TCG Pocket deck tech! This tech focuses on a deck based around the newest Drop Event, which itself is based on Cresselia ex.

Cresselia ex is a unique promo not found in any of the current packs within PTCGP. As such, it’s only currently obtainable during the Cresslia ex Drop Event ending early on Monday, February 17th. Therefore, it’s wise to go through that event and be sure to pick up both of the unique promo cards found within it.

With that out of the way, let’s look at this deck and how it functions!

This deck features cards that work well with Cresselia ex, the main draw of this deck. Cresselia ex is a tank of a Pokémon; it heals whenever you draw Psychic Energy from the Energy Zone onto it. Interestingly and thematically, this healing directly mirrors its counterpoint, Darkrai ex, and its own Darkness Energy-driven chip damage. Note that this healing doesn’t have to just be from your manual Energy play for the turn. For this reason, we also have the full Gardevoir line to back up and expedite Energy production.

However, with all of the hype centered on Cresselia ex, its heaviest hitter is actually Mismagius ex. With the ability to unconditionally Confuse opposing Pokémon, both Mismagius ex and its pre-evolution Misdreavus serve as extremely effective means to stifle opposing attacks.

Psychic-Type Has The Best Trainer Support

Some players will argue that Water-type or even Grass-type have really strong contenders for the most support in the game through its Trainer cards. After all, Misty is still a monster of a Supporter. However, this is simply untrue. Of all the types in Pokémon TCG Pocket, the one that’s most supported by Trainer cards is the Psychic-type. Just about every type has Supporters that assist it well (including more generic Supporters like Sabrina or Giovanni). However, the Psychic-type Pokémon also have Item cards like Mythical Slab (a one-of in Lunar Coven) to back them up. The support for Psychics is palpable!

Lunar Coven also runs the usual suite of Poké Ball and Professor’s Research. By now, I’d prefer not to rehash this necessity, so in the future, I will refer you to other deck techs of mine for the reasons why. Both cards are two-of staples in PTCGP and you need to pick these up in pairs to be remotely viable. Thus, it’s more than worth it to spend some Shop Tickets on these.

Promo-A - #2 Space-time Smackdown - #146 Pokemon CommunicationSpace-time Smackdown - #147 Giant Cape

For other cards, we also run a single copy of X Speed, a copy of Pokémon Communication (a new breakout star Item card for decks with many evolutions), and one Giant Cape. Giant Cape is especially spicy in this build. Put simply, for all of the healing that Cresselia ex is providing itself, a Giant Cape gives 20 extra maximum Hit Points, allowing anything a bit more of a boost. Sometimes this is exactly what you need to evade a one-hit KO!

Lunar Coven Deck Costs on Pokémon TCG Pocket

Because of the sheer number of promotional cards in Lunar Coven, this deck’s costs are much less hefty than other decks we’ve covered in this series. The one downside to some of the promo acquisition is that with this newest Drop Event, the promos you get are always random. Therefore, it could be a bit of a slog to get everything. This is why we advise that you prioritize the Drop Event promos first!

Anyway, here are the total costs in in-game currency to obtain every card for Lunar Coven:

  • Drop Event cards: 4
  • Shop Tickets: 10
  • Pack Points: 1,650
    • Genetic Apex: 300
      • Mewtwo: 300
    • Mythical Island: 70
    • Space-Time Smackdown: 1,280
      • Dialga: 280
      • Palkia: 1,000

As you can see, Space-Time Smackdown is the chokepoint to obtain this deck after you’ve gone through the Cresselia ex Drop Event for at least two of each applicable promo card. We advise that you go through the Dialga packs first if you’re opening packs to obtain cards. This is because you only need six cards from this subset as opposed to the Palkia subset’s two copies of Mismagius ex. In this way, you can store Pack Points to lead up to the acquisition of two Mismagius ex. From there it’s fairly smooth sailing!

Pleasant Dreams Ahead

While this deck is decidedly untested except as a similar build to the CPU’s Expert-level Cresselia ex deck, the modifications we’ve done here will serve to make it more consistently powerful. Remember, the Cresselia ex Drop Event only goes on through the early hours of Monday, February 17th! Have you gotten all the promos for this event?
