New Star Wars Unlimited Set Announced: Prepare to Jump to Lightspeed in 2025

Fantasy Flight Games has announced the fourth set for Star Wars Unlimited, with the set’s name revealed as Jump to Lightspeed. Having launched in early 2024, Star Wars Unlimited – the latest in a long line of trading card games based a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away – has been hugely successful, with three sets already in the hands of eager players across the globe.

The third set, Twilight of the Republic, launched in November 2024, bringing players to the forefront of The Clone Wars with new keywords and a focus on epic, larger scale ground battles. Not waiting for one parsec (and yes, we know it’s a unit of distance, not time, but George Lucas clearly didn’t; the error was, however, somewhat corrected in Solo: A Star Wars Story!), FF has just given us the first details on the new set.

What Is the New Keyword in Jump to Lightspeed?

The Jump to Lightspeed set is the first to focus on space units, with the previous three sets having had a stronger focus on ground units. Jump to Lightspeed also introduces the Piloting keyword (you can see an example of this on the Chewbacca card above), which allows ground units to be played as upgrades on vehicles. Now, if you want Boba Fett to actually fly his Firespray model ship into battle, or for Han Solo and Chewbacca to co-pilot the Millennium Falcon (given that the latter allows for two pilots to be added), it’ll be possible to do so, with the Piloting keyword bestowing bonuses on the space unit, depending on who’s at the helm.

What Else Is New in Jump to Lightspeed?

That’s not the only new aspect of Jump to Lightspeed; however, in this instance it’s something that’ll be missing from the game going forward. That’s because the set heralds the end of Star Wars Unlimited’s fantastic two-player starter sets, though in fairness they’re being replaced by an entirely new type of product: Spotlight Decks.

Spotlight Decks will be single-player, preconstructed decks comprised of cards from multiple sets, though Fantasy Flight has sought to reassure players that the majority of cards in each deck will be from the newest set. The first announced deck is one headed up by a new Boba Fett leader card (shown above), which has the Pilot subtype, meaning that it can be moved directly onto a vehicle when it deploys.

There’s also a new type of booster pack, known as Carbonite Edition booster packs. These are not dissimilar to Collector Boosters in Magic: The Gathering, with each card in the pack being a special variant of an existing card. That means that you’ll only find the rarer card variants in these boosters; foil, Hyperspace, Hyperspace foil, Showcase, or even the entirely new Prestige variant cards, which will be exclusive to Carbonite Edition boosters. Though standard boosters have, so far, remained in circulation, Carbonite Edition boosters will be available for a limited time only per set, so once their print run has sold out, they’re gone forever.

When Will Jump to Lightspeed Be Released?

Jump to Lightspeed is set for launch in March, 2025; as the biggest shake-up to the Star Wars Unlimited formula so far, it’s a set we’re eagerly looking forward to. Though it’s disappointing to see the end of the superb two-player starter sets, which provided one of the best jumping on points ever for new trading card game players, Spotlight Decks will no doubt fill the void nicely, and we’re very keen to see what we’ll find in Carbonite Edition boosters!
