With Monster Train 2 already out (proving itself to be better even than its stunning predecessor), and Slay the Spire 2 on the way, it seems that this year is definitely one of the biggest on record for the roguelike deckbuilding genre. Even if we don’t consider those two blockbuster titles, there’s been a flood of deckbuilding games this year, making it an especially busy one for fans of the genre. With no signs of that letting up, the upcoming title Zodiac Mountain looks set to be another game which will captivate digital deckbuilding fans. Let’s check it out!

ToggleWhat is Zodiac Mountain?

A roguelike deckbuilder based primarily around using your deck in combat encounters (much like the aforementioned Monster Train and Slay the Spire games), Zodiac Mountain is heavily themed around Chinese mythology; it sees your Panda hero attempting to ascend the titular mountain and become part of the zodiac. Facing off against mythical Asian creatures, you’ll make use of dual Ying and Yang decks; the Yin cards channeling the Qi energy needed to play the Yang cards, giving Zodiac Mountain an immediately unique feel.
With the ability to switch cards between the two sides, it really does provide both a highly thematic and original layer of strategy to the usual deckbuilding action. There’s a real beauty to the creature designs, the animation and the general, overall aesthetic, which gives Zodiac Mountain its unmistakable, authentic-feeling Asian ambience.
Like most roguelike deckbuulding games, the initial overload of abilities, actions, keywords and symbols can be overwhelming; doubly so when there are unique elements which aren’t seen in other titles. Yet, having played the demo myself, it seems that there’s enough familiar aspects of Zodiac Mountain that, if you’ve played other deckbuilding games, it’s easy enough to pick up and learn new mechanics as you go.
When Will Zodiac Mountain Be Released?

Though no firm release date has been set for the full game, a demo will be available to download from Steam on September 29th, so you’ll soon be able to check out its unique, card-based charm for yourself. You can also add Zodiac Mountain to your wishlist using the below “‘wishlist on Steam” button!
