When Magic: The Gathering launched way back in 1993, an entirely new type of card game was born. Though more commonly known these days as Trading Card Games (or TCGs), Collectible Card Games were unlike anything players had encountered before, and Magic itself became a near-instant phenomenon, with some cards becoming very highly sought after. More than 30 years later, the game’s cards can still command ridiculously high prices. Which are the most valuable cards in Magic: The Gathering right now though? We took a look at the current, highest prices on the market at TCGplayer to find out. So let’s take a look at the most valuable Magic: The Gathering cards!
Table of Contents
Toggle10. The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale – Rare

Hailing from Legends, the seventh Magic: The Gathering set, the tenth most valuable card right now is The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale. It’s a Legendary Land card, which enforces an extra 1 mana cost on all creature cards in play during upkeep. The card, released in 1994, now fetches a seriously high price!
9. Juzam Djinn – Rare

The very first expansion for Magic: The Gathering was Arabian Nights, released back in December 1993. This Juzam Djinn card is from the Arabian Nights set. It looks to me like the card’s artwork is paying homage to Tim Curry as Darkness, from the mid-80s Ridley Scott movie, Legend.
8. Mishra’s Workshop – Rare

I have to say that I’m not a fan of the murky, indistinct artwork on this Mishra’s Workshop card, from the second Magic: The Gathering expansion, Antiquities. Though it doesn’t look the part (in my opinion at least), that certainly hasn’t hurt the value of the Mishra’s Workshop card, which will set you back at least a few thousand dollars if you want to get your hands on it!
7. Mox Ruby – Rare

One of the “Power Nine” cards, the Mox Ruby is the first card on this list that commands such a high price that it also appears on the list of the overall most valuable TCG cards of 2025. As do all of the following cards on this list of the most valuable Magic: The Gathering cards!
6. Cloud, Midgar Mercenary – Promo, 001

A very rare variant of the Cloud, Midgar Mercenary card, this particular Final Fantasy Promo was earned from tournaments at Magic’s Pro Tour organized play events. Publishers Wizards of the Coast knew exactly what they were doing when making this a rare Promo card; Cloud Strife, the hero of video game Final Fantasy VII, is one of the most popular characters in the long history of the RPG series.
5. Avatar Aang (Raised Foil) – Mythic Rare, 363

Due to how recently released this double-faced card is, the value has been fluctuating wildly as new copies are found and sold. The raised foil treated Avatar Aang/Aang, Master of Elements card is found in less than 1% of Avatar: The Last Airbender Collector Boosters, making it highly desirable and very costly to pull. Unless you get extremely lucky of course!
4. Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer – Promo, 002

This variant of Monkey Pirate, Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer is another Promo which was given as a Prize during certain competitive events. Due to its scarcity, and no doubt its gorgeous artwork, it has rocketed up the list of the most valuable Magic: The Gathering cards!
3. Mox Sapphire – Rare

Given that Mox Sapphire appeared in the very first Magic: The Gathering set (retrospectively dubbed “Alpha”), we’d expect that version of the card, with its black borders, to be here. However, it must be the case that the Unlimited Edition, white bordered card is currently more available to purchase, as its position here is based on current market values at TCGplayer, not overall prices on other secondary markets. We know that other cards can command seriously big bucks, but aren’t so widely available.
2. Traveling Chocobo (Borderless, Japanese Exclusive) – Mythic Rare, 551

A testament to just how popular Final Fantasy is, here’s another card from the set. Though all other Traveling Chocobo color variants appear on our list of the most valuable MTG Final Fantasy cards, this Black version is exclusive to Japan. That makes it incredibly sought after, and far more difficult to get in the West!
1. The Soul Stone (Cosmic Foil) – Mythic Rare, 242

Despite not being so limited that it has a serial number printed on the card, just like the Avatar Aang card, The Soul Stone’s Cosmic Foil variant appears in less than 1% of Collector Booster packs. That of course means that it could be anything from 0.00001% of boosters up to 0.9% of booster packs containing the card, but either way it’s incredibly rare and very desirable. If you want to try your hand at pulling one of these cards, you’ll need to get hold of a Marvel’s Spider-Man Collector Booster. Of course, you could always buy the single card, but given that it’s the most valuable Magic: The Gathering card on TCGplayer right now, you’ll need to have quite a few dollars to hand, to say the least!
