Renegade Game Studios have been making great use of numerous Hasbro licensed properties in the last few years, with numerous titles based on GI Joe, Transformers, Power Rangers and My Little Pony bringing each franchise to the tabletop.
Clever and thematic designs for each game utilising these licenses has ensured that these aren’t the lazily applied, old fashioned style of licensed game at all – and gives them an appeal to fans who are serious about their tabletop gaming too!
As well as board games and role playing games, Renegade have also released numerous deck building games based on each of these Hasbro franchises.
The most recent of these, the My Little Pony Deck Building Game, was released in 2022 – and a new, exciting crossover expansion has just been announced!
Not for the first time – as there have also been two excellent, well received comic book crossovers from IDW – the My Little Pony characters are crossing over with what may seem to be an unlikely universe: Transformers.
Yet, as those two IDW comic book crossovers showed, there’s surprising mileage in the mashup of the two universes – and it actually works really well!
So here we are, with the first tabletop game that brings the two seemingly disparate sets of characters and settings together; Collision Course: A Transformers Crossover Expansion for the My Little Pony Deck Building Game
When magical mayhem results in the Cybertronian Transformers arriving in Equestria, they team up with the ‘Mane Six’ ponies – and their faithful dragon Spike too.
With the co-operative My Little Pony Deck Building Game already making use of double sided cards, it’ll be no surprise to see that being put to good use in the Collision Course crossover expansion.
Numerous card previews show that the Transformers characters translate well to the whimsical, appealingly colourful My Little Pony universe – with characters such as Optimus Prime, Grimlock, Soundwave, Arcee, Windblade, Gauge and Wildwheel each teaming up with a different pony (or dragon, in Spike’s case!).
Naturally, with the Transformers coming to Equestria they do of course bring their own flavour along with them – so Energon will power the abilities of the displaced Cybertronians.
Other Transformers characters will make their presence felt on different cards too – such as Hurdles – though these have yet to be fully revealed.
Collision Course: A Transformers Crossover Expansion for the My Little Pony Deck Building Game is due to be released in the third quarter of 2023 – and can be pre-ordered directly from the Renegade Game Studios store at this link.
As a bonus for pre-ordering the Collision Course expansion directly from the Renegade Game Studios online store, fans will also receive the My Little Pony Deck-Building Game Meeple Pack #5 for free.
This gives players cute, wooden characters to use instead of the cardboard versions that are packaged with the basic expansion – and it’s a worthwhile upgrade, especially as it’ll be free of charge.
The seven meeples are sure to be highly sought after by both My Little Pony and Transformers fans, as they’ll feature the expansion’s team ups as follows:
- Twilight Sparkle/Optimus Prime
- Rainbow Dash/Windblade
- Rarity/Arcee
- Pinkie Pie/Gauge
- Fluttershy/Soundwave
- Applejack/Wildwheel
- Spike/Grimlock
Though not the first crossover expansion for a Renegade/Hasbro deck building title – that honour goes to the GI Joe/Transformers expansion New Alliances, for the GI Joe Deck Building Game – it’s definitely the one that’s most likely to bring in a new audience on both sides of the mashup.
After all, fans of both GI Joe and Transformers tend to already be interested in both franchises – but this just might tempt fans of Transformers to check out the My Little Pony game too.
We’re already prepping our Energon cubes for a trip to Equestria – and we can’t wait to get our hooves on this unusual crossover later in the year!
