It’s an exciting time to be a fan of UniVersus; though the game has been around in one form or another since 2006 (originating as the Universal Fighting System, or UFS, and mostly adapting video games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat into card game form), the last few years have seen the game finding itself a growing, dedicated fanbase, mostly thanks to steady releases of sets based on the hugely popular manga/anime, My Hero Academia.
In addition to My Hero Academia sets, UniVersus publisher UVS Games have also been snapping up (and making great use of) licenses such as Cowboy Bebop, Trigun Stampede, Critical Role, Godzilla and Attack On Titan.
The Attack on Titan set, Battle For Humanity, is arguably the most exciting of all; that’s because it’s the very first full set release, for the modern incarnation of UniVersus, that doesn’t focus on My Hero Academia. It’s built to be more accessible for new players and is the biggest UniVersus set to date, with around 300 cards to collect!
Not only that, but Attack On Titan: Battle For Humanity introduces double sided cards to UniVersus for the first time. Though we’ve seen double sided cards in other games (perhaps most notably in the now defunct Transformers TCG and Magic: The Gathering), Attack On Titan’s double sided cards are a completely new addition to UniVersus. So how do you use them? Let’s find out!

ToggleHow Do I Use Double Sided UniVersus Cards?
Currently, there are just a small number of Character cards that are double sided. Given the nature of double sided cards, which obviously mean that they can’t simply be added into a deck without being able to see them as they come up, it’s almost certain that Character cards will be the only type of card in UniVersus to have double sided versions.
If you know how to play UniVersus, then you’ll know how to use Character cards. It just so happens that some of the Character cards in Attack On Titan: Battle For Humanity are double sided! Using them is very straightforward, and this mostly takes advantage of a new keyword: Form.
Meeting certain conditions, specified on each card, will allow you to turn over your Character card, thus transforming it from a human Character into a Titan!
For example, you’ll see from the Bertolt Hoover card above (on the left of the image), the Form keyword, which we’ve circled in red, has a certain condition with which it can be triggered. In the case of Bertolt Hoover, once per turn you can discard 1 card, then draw 1 card; if a player has 9 or more foundations, you can then transform the card. This means turning it over, at which point it becomes Bertolt, Colossus Titan, which you can see in the above image on the right.
That’s all you need to know, in terms of how to use double sided cards in UniVersus, but do bear in mind that each Character card’s condition for transforming is unique.

All of these cards can be found in normal booster packs, aside from the final one, the C01 1/22 Eren Yeager, Promising Scout (which has Attack Titan, Ferocious Challenger on the reverse side of the card); that one is featured as part of the Attack On Titan: Battle For Humanity Challenger Series deck.
Double sided cards appear at the rate of roughly 1 in every 6 booster packs, but they also have a variety of different rarity levels; you can take a look at our guide to the various card rarities that feature in UniVersus for further information.
