Any new Trading Card Game (or TCG) has a bit of a barrier to entry for new players; even if we set aside the cost involved in jumping into a new game, actually learning to play without being intimidated by a new ruleset is another hurdle for people to overcome. There are numerous ways that TCGs have dealt with this initial learning-to-play issue in the last few decades, and one of the best methods we’ve seen so far is in the form of the Proving Grounds box set, for League of Legends Trading Card Game, Riftbound. Let’s take a look at the cards in the Riftbound Origins: Proving Grounds set, and then take a quick look at why we’re so impressed with Proving Grounds in general!

There are 24 cards exclusive to the Riftbound Origins: Proving Grounds set; each card’s set code and number can be seen in the bottom left of the card. For example, the first card (Annie, Fiery) has the card number 001/024, with the set code, OGS, to the left of that number:

A box set which looks and feels like a board game, Riftbound Origins: Proving Grounds contains 4 decks, so that up to 4 players can play Riftbound, with each deck featuring exclusive cards that won’t be part of the wider Riftbound Origins set (the cards for which you can see in our Riftbound Origins card list). It also contains numerous exclusive accessories, such as individual player boards and acrylic standees to represent each Legend in the game.

It also contains a step-by-step how to play walkthrough, along with a more complete rules guide, and even tips on how to improve each deck once you’re ready to move on beyond the Proving Grounds set, and into the wider world of Riftbound. Proving Grounds is a great learning and teaching tool, as well as being a self-contained and expandable experience, in one affordable box set.

Arriving in October 2025, Proving Grounds will be released alongside the Riftbound Origins. For League of Legends fans or fans of, for example, the phenomenal animated League of Legends series Arcane, who are new to TCGs, Proving Grounds will be the perfect starting point. Even if you aren’t new to TCGs, having a ready-made, pre-built and fine-tuned experience, perfect for up to 4 players at a time, makes Proving Grounds an excellent product to get your hands on if you’re intending to jump on board with Riftbound!
