MTG Modern Unbannings Cause Drastic Spikes in Card Prices

Modern Unbannings Cause Prices to Spike

Monday’s banned and restricted announcement brought some much-needed vibrance to the Modern format – perhaps some unchecked power, too. Wizards of the Coast finally banned The One Ring and Jegantha, the Wellspring, and threw in Amped Raptor to nerf Boros Energy. The biggest shock, however, was the list of cards being unbanned: Mox Opal, Splinter Twin, Green Sun’s Zenith, and Faithless Looting are coming to a Modern deck near you very soon.

Magic players snapped into action, resulting in immediate price spikes and imparting a sense of the forthcoming meta. Here are a few of the biggest winners of the last 24 hours.

Green Sun’s Zenith

Everyone’s favorite Dryad Arbor tutor soared from $11 to its all-time high of $40 in a single day. Not bad for a card released in 2012! Modern players are hoping its unbanning heralds a return of Elves to the format; though, for the time being, Amulet Titan is the deck to watch now that it has another way to grab a Dryad of the Ilysian Grove or the eponymous Primeval Titan itself.

Head to Cardsphere to get your copy.

Mox Opal

Mox Opal surged to almost $200 yesterday, which means…Affinity is back…? Maybe? The card was certainly a menace when it was previously banned, but the format has shifted and perhaps it won’t again serve as the lynchpin for the format’s strongest deck. Expect some shenanigans alongside Urza’s Saga.

Splinter Twin

The community has been calling for this unbanning basically since the card was banned; and, like a token copy of a cursed monkey’s paw, Splinter Twin arrives to a meta brimming with too much removal for it to make an impact. Still, when Deceiver Exarch comes a-callin’, Modern players will be ready with $33 Twins, up from $7 last week.

Faithless Looting

Magic players love their bling, which is probably why this old border version of Faithless Looting from The Brothers’ War: Commander shot up to $10 overnight, far surpassing its brethren sitting between $0.50 and $2. I don’t expect this one to last, but the trend is pretty funny to witness.

Plenty of cheap copies available at Cardsphere.

The Modern Way

Now that these unbannings have been announced, which Modern decks are you most excited to resuscitate? Or, do you think these changes will have little effect on the format? Let us know!
