Holo and Foil Cards in the One Piece Card Game Explained

One Piece Foil Cards of various types and rarities, arranged in a grid pattern

Though we’ve previously covered different types of foil card treatments in other games (check out our Holo vs Reverse Holo Pokémon guide, for example), there’s an abundance of different foil types in the One Piece Card Game; enough that it can be confusing to know where you’ll find them, and what each type of foil is known as. So let’s take a look at all of the different types of foil card in the One Piece Card Game!

Rare Cards – Non-Holo Foil

The Rare foil One Piece card, Kouzuki Momonosuke

Of course, by their nature, Rare cards are less prevalent than Common or Uncommon cards, but Rare cards are more frequently found in booster packs than other types of card on this list (take a look at our One Piece card rarities guide for more details). They have an R in the bottom right of the card, and the foil treatment doesn’t have the refractive, rainbow effect. The foil only appears on the card’s border and on certain elements within the illustration too. As it’s not a full foil treatment over the entirety of the card, and the lack of refraction makes it more subtle (we promise that the card shown above is definitely a foil card!), it’s very easy to mistake these for standard, non-foil cards in some cases.

Super Rare Cards – Holo Foil

The Super Rare One Piece Character card, Kaido

Though Super Rare cards, designated with an SR in the bottom right of the card, feature a rainbow holo foil treatment, much like Rare cards the foil doesn’t cover the entire face of the card. Instead, and again this is similar to Rare cards, the border and certain elements of the illustration have the foiling, but it’s much more obvious due to the striking rainbow effect.

Secret Rare Cards – Gold Border with Textured Holo Foil

Featuring the SEC code in the bottom right, Secret Rare cards are very easy to spot, given that they have gold borders and a textured finish, complete with rainbow, refractive holo foil across most of the card. They’re striking to look at, and it’s always exciting to find a Secret Rare in a booster, even though there’s plenty of other card types that are rarer and more valuable to collectors.

Other Card Types and Foil Treatments

You’ll find textured and non-textured foil treatments on alternate art and manga art cards, which are usually “parallel” versions of cards at Super Rare or Secret Rare levels. These can be identified by a star above the card’s rarity code (an example of which can be seen in the form of the alternate art card above).

In reprint boosters, such as The Best (which can be found in Starter Decks currently, as well as being available separately), cards of any rarity, even Common and Uncommon, can have a sparkle foil effect, with the skull, crossbones, and hat logo of the Straw Hat Pirates in a pattern across the card.
