Is Avengers: Armageddon #1 Worth Reading?

If you’re buying Avengers: Armageddon #1 as an MTG fan without having read recent Marvel comics, you might be a little confused as to the general characters, the members of the Avengers and their current status quo in this issue.
The action kicks off in the aftermath of a previous event, which saw General “Thunderbolt” Ross (aka the Red Hulk) taking down Victor Von Doom, who sought to spread his fascist regime worldwide. Along with his team of “Hulks”, Ross decides to bring his own brand of democracy and “freedom” to various nation states, in opposition to US foreign policy and the UN’s wishes. Though the Avengers and other super-powered individuals are warned to stay clear of the situation, it’s clear that they aren’t going to be able to keep away, setting the stage for an epic showdown on several fronts.
If this is your first “event” comic ever, or even in a long while, you might get some enjoyment from this issue, which sets the scene very well for the epic action that’s sure to be on the way. However, if you have familiarity with Marvel’s events in the past few decades, you’ll recognize a lot of familiar elements here; there’s a very Civil War-esque feel to the overall setup, and unfortunately it feels somewhat disconnected to other stories currently occurring, or in the process of being set up, in the Marvel Universe.
That said, if you’re seeing the comic as a bonus in getting your hands on an exclusive MTG card, it’s an enjoyable enough read, and the artwork is excellent throughout.
