Though digital card games are ten a penny these days, we usually see the most attention given to roguelike deckbuilding titles. However, other genres definitely do exist in the digital realm; there are plenty of adaptations of physical card games, for example, along with digital TCGs. Though many digital TCGs are adaptations of real world card games, there are exceptions, with Hearthstone and Legends of Runeterra being two big examples. Now, another has arrived, in the form of Chrono CCG. Let’s check it out!

What is Chrono CCG?

A digital collectible card game (or CCG, a term interchangeable with TCG, or trading card game), Chrono CCG is a new, indie card game from a team of industry veterans. The collective experience of the team is incredibly impressive, and their involvement with Legends of Runeterra, along with decades of experience with CCGs in general, has led to the creation of Chrono CCG.

It’s a game which feels like a spiritual successor to the likes of Legends of Runeterra; that’s quite deliberate given the development team’s pedigree. It also feels like a more substantial and deeply strategic digital CCG than players may be used to. Though it’s hardly on the level of something like, say, UniVersus in its complexity, with its shifting timelines, evolving agents and other mechanics, it definitely feels like a deeper and more tactical experience than the norm when it comes to digital CCGs. More akin to games such as Magic: The Gathering than Hearthstone, for example, with rounds at meaningful, deliberately paced lengths as a result.

Is Chrono CCG Free to Play?

The short answer is that, now it’s in Early Access, Chrono CCG is indeed a free to play experience. That means that you can jump in, learn how to play and actually get started without any cost whatsoever, as long as you have a PC which can handle it (it doesn’t need to be a ray-tracing, ultra-specced monster!). It does even work well enough on the Steam Deck too, just so you’re aware.

What it also means is that there are cosmetics and “convenience” items which can be bought in-game, with in-app purchases enabled. Of course, “convenience” very likely mean that you’ll be able to unlock items in-game earlier than you otherwise would be able to. How this translates to any grind, perceived or otherwise, is yet to be seen. Free booster packs are still available in-game however, even now!

When Will Chrono CCG Leave Early Access?

The plan is for Chrono CCG to reach full release in late 2026. The game will continue to be updated and refined throughout the Early Access period, and the developers are using feedback from working closely with Chrono CCG’s community in order to push the game towards its full release version.
