Meet Jason Brown

Billed as Card Gamer’s Magic: The Gathering specialist, Jason’s interest and expertise in card games goes back even further than the 1993 release of MTG – and covers a wide range of game genres, formats and subject matter.

Beyond card games, Jason is a big fan of D&D, board games and tabletop miniatures games.

Jason’s also a big fan of deck building roguelite video games; though he claims to not be very good at them, that doesn’t stop him from becoming hopelessly addicted to pretty much any digital card game you can think of!

Passion

Growing up in North London, I was only ever a tube journey – at most – away from a specialist tabletop gaming shop.

Fuelled by obsessions with Star Wars and Dungeons & Dragons as a kid, I was incredibly passionate about board games, card games and RPGs. I received my very first D&D set, the famous Red Box, for my 8th birthday!

I was a teenager when Magic: The Gathering was released; its unique concept and the endless possibilities of deckbuilding captured my imagination very quickly.

When the CCG/TCG market exploded around the success of MTG, I devoured games such as Netrunner, the Star Wars CCG and the Star Trek CCG too. Pokemon came later, of course – and, despite being an adult by then, my interest in the Pokemon video games fuelled my interest in the TCG too!

Later games such as The Call of Cthulhu CCG (and later the LCG!) grabbed my attention – and, even all these years later, my interest in Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon and other card games is still going strong.

Expertise

I first worked in the video games industry in the late 90s – and had my first writing work published just before the turn of the millennium.

I wrote tabletop gaming articles for now-defunct magazine Knucklebones and sadly-closed retailer IGUK in the early 00s.

I interviewed famous board game designers such as Steve Jackson, James Ernest, Kevin Wilson and ex-MTG designer Charlie Catino for numerous articles back then too!

In more recent years, I’ve written thousands of articles covering video games, tabletop games, films, comic books and more for a variety of sites and publications – including Card Gamer’s sister site, Retro Dodo.
