There has been no shortage of heists in the Star Wars universe. From getting hold of the Death Star plans in Rogue One, to the plot to steal coaxium in Solo, heists are front and center in plenty of Star Wars stories. A Lawless Time, the upcoming expansion for the Star Wars Unlimited Trading Card Game, seeks to tap into the frenetic energy of this action packed genre. Let’s talk about five ways that A Lawless Time empowers you to pull off your own cunning scheme in a galaxy far, far away.

Toggle1. You Can Assemble a Crew

In every good heist movie, there’s a scene where the team gets brought together. Pulling off an audacious robbery doesn’t just require a collection of swashbuckling rogues; you need a tech specialist, a crafty double agent, and having a few muscular thugs never hurts. A Lawless Time emphasizes the diversity of different talents that you need to pull off a classic caper through its gameplay.
Many cards from A Lawless Time reward deckbuilding that focuses on bringing together cards with a multitude of different aspects. Leia Organa – Someone Who Loves You gives an experience token to a unit for every different aspect among units you control when she’s deployed. Jaunty Light Freighter gains an experience token for every different aspect among units you control when it gets played. There’s even a card called Putting a Team Together, which lets you search the top eight cards of your deck for a vigilance, aggression, or cunning unit and add it to your hand. Put all of this together, and your deck will contain cards from a variety of different aspects that are all dedicated to getting the job done.
2. There’s Plenty of Loot for the Taking

It’s said that money makes the world go around, and that’s just as true of planets like Coruscant, Tatooine and especially Canto Bight, as it is of Earth. If you’re going to pull off a masterful theft, not only are you going to need resources to put your plans together, but once the job is done, your crew will need to cash out and split up.
A Lawless Time introduces Credits, a new form of token, which represent the currency used in the Star Wars universe. Credits work like one-off resources, which can be used once to discount the cost of a card by one.
These Credits are used to evoke all sorts of heist tropes. Backed By the Hutts creates a Credit token and then deals damage to an enemy unit equal to the number of Credits that you control, showing the power of money in a dangerously literal way. Targeted For Removal lets you put bounties on your opponent’s units, gaining Credits equal to their cost when you take them out. Finally, Payroll Heist grants you a Credit token for each unit that you attack with during a turn, letting you go all in for big rewards.
3. Units Can Betray You

You’ve broken in, you’ve grabbed the loot, and you’ve escaped, but the story isn’t over yet. No heist would be complete without a few good betrayals to spice things up. A Lawless Time features a wide selection of cards that can force units to betray the player controlling them, revealing their true allegiance.
Han Solo’s traitorous mentor appears in A Lawless Time as the Leader card Tobias Beckett – People are Predictable. He allows you to sell out your allies for cash, granting your opponent control of one of your units, in exchange for a Credit token. Beckett’s unit side then completes the betrayal, as you can see from the above image! You Hold This gives control of one of your units to the opponent, but also blasts one of the units that they already control for 4 damage in the chaos of the betrayal. Then there’s Hunter For Hire, a mercenary whose loyalty goes to the highest bidder, as any player can sacrifice a token as an action to sway the hunter over to their side.
If you’re cunning, you can use the conflicting loyalties of all these characters to your advantage and become a devious mastermind.
4. You Get to See the Underbelly of the Star Wars Universe

Heists are fun and all, but they’re also illegal. The crew that you put together might be full of charming anti-heroes, but however charismatic they may be, they’re all about to pull off a pretty major crime! A Lawless Time taps into the criminality of heist crews by featuring a rogue’s gallery of units with the Underworld and Bounty Hunter traits.
Boba Fett – Krayt’s Claw Commander has both traits and creates a Credit token whenever a Bounty Hunter you control defeats an enemy unit. Bib Fortuna creates a Credit when you play him if you already control another underworld unit, and Maz Kanata – Where’s My Boyfriend lets you search the top five cards of your deck for an Underworld unit and play them at a discounted cost when she attacks.
This just goes to show that even in the bleakest parts of the criminal underworld of the Star Wars universe, you need to be able to cooperate to get a big job done.
5. You Can Go Big

What’s the point of pulling off the crime of the century if you can’t be a bit audacious? A Lawless Time features a powerful selection of high cost cards. You can either purchase these with all of the Credits that you amass with all of your shady wheeling and dealing, or use them to defend against whatever schemes your opponent might have in store.
By spending nine resources, you can hire a Mercenary Fleet to fight your battles for you. You can also bring down the Persecutor, a Star Destroyer which defended the planet Scarif during Rogue One, to blitz an area with fire and deal three damage to every unit deployed there. Not to mention its twin, the Intimidator, which lets you return all of your resources to your hand in order to gain an equal number of Credits.
If you’re looking for big cards, to reward you as a powerful payoff for a game spent patiently plotting, A Lawless Time has plenty to go around.
