The fifth set of Pokémon’s Mega Evolution era is here. Pitch Black is a small set, with just 84 cards plus Secret Rares. Which cards are fans most keen to get their hands on? Let’s find out, as we take a look at the most valuable Pokémon cards in Pitch Black!
10. Goldeen – Illustration Rare, 087/084
Water type Pokémon, Goldeen, is one of the original 151 from the very first video games in the series. As such, it remains very popular indeed. This gorgeous Illustration Rare card shows the fish-like Pokémon in its natural habitat. These non-battle cards tend to be very popular among fans, and this card is no exception!
9. Slowbro – Illustration Rare, 090/084
Slowbro evolves from Slowpoke, and is another Pokémon from the first ever Pokémon games on the Game Boy. This illustration of a Slowpoke at night, fascinated by a lamp post, is another adorable card which shows the Pokémon’s character outside of battles.
8. Gladion’s Final Battle – 118/084
Gladion was introduced in the Pokémon Sun and Moon games as the player’s rival. A fun fact about Gladion: he’s part of the antagonistic group Team Skull.
7. Misty’s Vitality – Ultra Rare, 111/084
Any old school Pokémon fan will recognize Misty from the original Pokémon TV show, as one of the three main characters. Perhaps as a result, she’s always proven to be popular in the Pokémon Trading Card Game too, where her history goes way back to some of the earliest sets.
6. Gwynn – Special Illustration Rare, 119/084
In stark contrast to Misty, Gwynn is a much more recent addition to Pokémon lore. She appears as a main character in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and also in a newer incarnation of the Pokémon animated show, Pokémon Horizons. Her partner is a Chandelure, a Pokémon we’ll soon see!
5. Mega Chandelure ex – Special Illustration Rare, 115/084
I told you we’d be seeing Chandelure soon! Here we are with Mega Chandelure ex, which evolves from Lampent. These Pokémon resemble different types of light source; Lampent looks like a street light, and Chandelure, unsurprisingly, looks somewhat like a chandelier.
4. Mega Zeraora ex – Special Illustration Rare, 114/084
Mythical Pokémon Zeraora made its first appearance in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. It can mega evolve into the form shown on this card, Mega Zeraora, using Zeraorite. This ability was added in the Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, making it another recent addition to the Pokédex!
3. Morpeko ex – Special Illustration Rare, 117/084
The usually cute Morpeko appears on this Morpeko ex card in a much more frightening form! That’s because it has different forms in battle; Full Belly Mode and Hangry Mode. When in Full Belly Mode, Morpeko is cute and cuddly. When Morpeko gets hangry, however, this scary form is the result!
2. Mega Darkrai ex – Mega Hyper Rare, 120/084
Known as the Pitch-Black Pokémon, it’s clear that the Pitch Black set itself is named after Darkrai! So it’s no surprise to see it so close to the top of this list, in its Mega Hyper Rare form. These gold cards are spectacular in person, with shiny, textured treatments that can’t be done justice in a screenshot!

It really is Darkrai’s set, isn’t it? Here we are with the Mega Darkrai ex’s Special Illustration Rare card, the most valuable card in the Pitch Black set overall. If you manage to find this one in your booster pack, you’ve stumbled across not just a very impressive card, but a really valuable one too!
