Being the big Pokéfans that we are, we couldn’t resist heading into the long grass and grabbing ourselves a box of Krispy Kreme’s Pokémon-themed donuts. Celebrating Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, six are available, our local store only had four of them, so unfortunately we didn’t get to try the Squirtle or Bulbasaur donuts. However, we did get to taste the other four, so let’s take a look at the ones we got our hands on!
Clockwise from the top left in the image above we have the Pikachu, the Charmander, the Poké Ball and the Jigglypuff donuts. The Pikachu donut is filled with a Lemon Sherbet Kreme™, has lemon flavour icing and a fizzy Thunderbolt, plus a Pikachu plaque. Charmander has a dulce de leche and marshmallow filling, with the outside featuring caramel icing. glittery sprinkes and a Charmander decoration. Jigglypuff is an Original Glazed™ donut with strawberry flavour frosting, strawberry biscuit crumb and a Jigglypuff plaque. Finally, the Poké Ball is also an Original Glazed™ donut, dipped in white icing, Poké Ball inspired sprinkles and a chocolate band across the middle.
Our favorites were the Pikachu and Jigglypuff; the latter was probably the clear winner overall. The strawberry icing and shortcake crumb really worked for us. Charmander had an oddly overbearing flavor, and the Poké Ball was the opposite; it felt strangely flavorless despite its colorful look. It also doesn’t look much like a Poké Ball outside of the idealized photography shown by Krispy Kreme themselves.
The Squirtle and Bulbasaur donuts are only available for a week from select Krispy Kreme stores, so if you want to try these too, you’ll need to hunt them down!
Both Squirtle and Bulbasaur seem to be Original Glazed™ donuts with frosting. Squirtle has cotton candy flavoring and Bulbasaur has a vanilla iced flavor.
Are the Pokémon Krispy Kreme donuts worth catching? If you can find them, absolutely. We definitely enjoyed our taste tests with these, but we do wish the full selection was more widely available.
