The very first Pokémon movie was released way back in 1998. There have been a total of 24 animated movies since then and, with Detective Pikachu, one live action film released. All have featured Pokémon trainers and battles, being based on the video games. Though Detective Pikachu had more of a mystery feel, it was still set within the world of the video games, and was loosely based on a specific Nintendo 3DS title with the same name. Many Pokémon DVD releases have been packaged with promo cards for the Pokémon trading card game. However, none of them have had the trading card game featuring as a major part of the story. Until now!

The Pokémon Company have released a teaser for Pokémon: Wild Card, a movie that’s due to be released in 2027. the trailer heavily features the cards from the Pokémon trading card game, along with glimpses of a mischievous Mimikyu. Though little is known of the movie at this point, the aesthetic hints at a more mature, serious tone than we’ve previously seen in Pokémon movies. Could Yu-Gi-Oh!-style monster summoning introduced here?

Even more intriguingly, the teaser says that Wild Card is coming in “2027 and beyond”. Could this be a theatrically released pilot for a new animated series?
