It’s time to use those Quirks – as we take a dive into all sets of the My Hero Academia CCG!
In the world of manga, My Hero Academia is a relative newcomer – having first appeared in 2014, in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan.
Though that’s almost a decade at this point, when you realise that One Piece debuted in 1997 and Pokemon even earlier, you can see why it still feels like a new kid on the block!
Despite its relative youth, My Hero Academia has been successfully adapted into an anime, tabletop games and – since 2021 – a collectable card game (or CCG) too.
One of the best things about the CCG is that it uses the Universus system – which means players will be able to build decks with characters from other franchises that use Universus too (though only for casual, not tournament, play).
Previously branded as UFS – the Universal Fighting System – the card backs changed, along with the name, when My Hero Academia CCG was launched.
Further franchises are coming to Universus, including Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop and Trigun Stampede.
For now, however, let’s take a look at the My Hero Academia – All Sets list!
1. My Hero Academia CCG – Base Set (MHA01, 2021)
The very first set for the My Hero Academia CCG was launched in late 2021, with the base set of cards.
The first set of 180 cards featured many of the biggest names from My Hero Academia – teacher All Might, several students such as Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugo, Shoto Todoroki (and more!), as well as villains – including Tomura Shigaraki and Nomu.
Among the base set’s releases is a 2-Player Rival Box; essentially a Starter Set that can be used to learn and play the game.
In this box are two pre-constructed decks and two random Ultra Rare cards; this is a box set that we picked up – and though it’s a great way to get started with My Hero Academia, the two included Ultra Rare cards were a bit disappointing.
That’s because, in our box, we got the same Ultra Rare character card twice – instead of two different cards!
However, if you’re looking for a cost effective way to get started with My Hero Academia, the base set’s Rival Box is definitely the best way to begin – especially as it gives you enough cards for you and an opponent!
There’s plenty of cards in the base set that are still strongly used in competitive, tournament play too – including cards such as Specialized Sound Waves, Staff Strike, Meteor Shower, Frigid Heatwave and Hardened Jab.
Of course, it also helps that My Hero Academia provides the perfect setting and cast of characters for a CCG to be based around – so it’s no wonder that it became successful among fans of the manga and anime, as well as CCG players looking for a new experience.
2. My Hero Academia CCG – Crimson Rampage (MHA02, 2022)
The success of the base set for the My Hero Academia CCG saw a second set of cards released in early 2022.
Crimson Rampage was a 117 card booster expansion that brought fan favourite villains such as Stain, Dabi and Himiko Toga into the CCG.
Other heroes made their debut in this second set too, as the game welcomed characters such as Mei Hatsume and Gran Torino.
Crimson Rampage also features great cards for players that want to construct more defensive decks, allowing for a wider variety of strategies and combos.
You’ll find a card from Crimson Rampage on our Most Valuable My Hero Academia Cards list – an expensive variant of Ibara Shiozaki, with a great illustration featuring the character’s vine hair!
3. My Hero Academia CCG – Heroes Clash (MHA03, 2022)
The third set of My Hero Academia cards – coded MHA03 – is Heroes Clash.
Though Heroes Clash introduces student Koji Koda and the Pro Hero, Thirteen, it has an even more exciting addition to the My Hero Academia CCG, particularly for collectors.
That exciting addition is a new rarity level – the Chrome Rare.
So – what’s so special about a Chrome Rare card, I hear you ask?
Well, for one thing, they have a special, dual-layered, metallic foil treatment – but the best part is that there are only 100 copies of each Chrome Rare card in existence.
So in Heroes Clash, there are five different Chrome Rare cards to find – each being a Character card from a previous set.
With only 100 copies of each of these 5 cards to find in the wild, I’m sure you can already understand just how sought after they are!
4. My Hero Academia CCG – League of Villains (MHA04, 2022)
The fourth set for the My Hero Academia CCG – League of Villains – doesn’t debut anything huge like Chrome Rare cards.
Strangely, League of Villains doesn’t include any cards at the Chrome Rare rarity level at all, either – which feels a bit like a step back after their exciting inclusion in Heroes Clash.
So what does League of Villains bring to the table?
Well, as you may have guessed from the title of this set, it has a strong focus on villains – and even introduces a new keyword to the CCG.
That keyword is ‘Echo’ – and it’s specifically an attack keyword.
If a card has ‘Echo’, players can pay one momentum to ‘Echo’ the attack – therefore, playing it twice!
It’s a great way of piling pressure on your opponent to react and block – and using just one attack to do so.
5. My Hero Academia CCG – Undaunted Raid (MHA05, 2023)
Undaunted Raid, the fifth set for the My Hero Academia CCG, is a pretty exciting set with lots of great features.
For one thing, Chrome Rares return – this time as Attacks instead of Characters, but with the same level of scarcity.
That’s right – just 100 copies of each Chrome Rare exist in the world!
Izuku Midoriya and Eijiro Kirishima return for the first time since the Base Set – and Pro Heroes, Sir Nighteye and Fat Gum, make their debut here.
That’s not all – Secret Rare cards now appear at the rate of one in every booster box; though still difficult to pull if you’re buying individual packs, it’s great news for players and collectors who do get their hands on a full box of boosters!
6. My Hero Academia CCG – Jet Burn (MHA06, 2023)
The sixth release for the My Hero Academia CCG, Jet Burn focuses strongly on Pro Heroes.
So far light on other details – given that it’s not yet released – what we do know is that Jet Burn will feature the debut of Pro Heroes such as Hawks, Best Jeanist and Ryukyu.
Others will return to the CCG – including Endeavor, Mt. Lady and more that have yet to be revealed.
