The fourth set for Riftbound, Vendetta, introduces several new mechanics, including Flow, Burn and Empower. Let’s take a look at one of them here, find out exactly what it does, and how to use it. Let’s find out how Empower works in Riftbound!
What Does Empower Do in Riftbound?

Empower allows you to pay an extra cost to make your card Empowered. Once Empowered, a card will gain bonuses specifically outlined in its text. For example, in the case of the Apprentice Mage shown above, you may exhaust any 2 Runes to Empower the unit. This does not have to be done immediately, but instead can be carried out during any of your action phases while you have the card in play.
Once Empowered, the Apprentice Mage can use Predict 2 immediately. This allows the player to look at the top 2 cards of their main deck and recycle either of them, placing remaining cards back on the top of their deck. The Empowered Apprentice Mage then has 1 extra Might on an ongoing basis.

It’s also possible for some cards to be Disempowered once they are Empowered. For example, the Mel, Soul’s Reflection card becomes Empowered whenever you empower another card. However, you may then exhaust Mel if she is Empowered in order to Disempower her, which allows her to give a unit -2 Might at a battlefield for the turn. Continue to empower other units and you can make use of Mel’s Disempower ability repeatedly!
Other cards have a variety of Empower methods and effects, as well as Disempower abilities too. We’re looking forward to seeing the possibilities open up when Riftbound’s Vendetta set is released.
