The nostalgia filled Pokemon Trading Card Game set, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: 151, is now available worldwide – a number of months after a successful and hugely popular launch in Japan.
Due to the gap in releasing in different territories – coupled with the fact that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: 151 brings the entirety of the original Pokedex back to the Trading Card Game – excitement over the set was huge, even for the non-English cards!
So we’ve taken a look at both the English releases and the Japanese cards here – with our most valuable list split by region.
Let’s take a look at the English release first – as we check out the most valuable Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: 151 cards!
Table of Contents
ToggleMost Valuable English Pokemon 151 Cards
1. Mew ex, 205/165 ($185)
The original Mew was itself a hidden Pokemon in the original Pokemon Red and Blue video games – which took the Pokedex count from the ‘official’ 150 up to 151 creatures.
It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that the current most valuable card in the entire Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: 151 set is the Mew ex, card number 205 in the 165 card set.
To those not well versed in the way that Rarities work in Pokemon and other trading card games, that numbering looks awfully confusing.
How can this be card number 205 if it’s only a 165 card set?
Well, that’s because this Mew ex card is what’s known as a Secret Rare; it’s a type of Rare card which goes beyond the set’s numbering – hence the ‘secret’ part.
At $185 on average and with few copies on offer (thanks to CardMarket for the pricing details!), this golden Mew ex is a Pokemon card that looks set to be on the wish lists of many long time fans.
Players, rather than collectors, may be better suited by this card’s less expensive, more common variantssuch as card 151 of the 165 card set, which sells at a much more reasonable average of around $9.
2. Charizard ex, 199/165 ($100)
You’ll notice from the numbering – with this being card number 199 – that it’s another Secret Rare from the Scarlet and Violet: 151 set.
It’s a full art, foil variant of the Charizard ex – and it looks absolutely stunning.
We here at Card Gamer have a bit of a soft spot for Charizard – and we’re not alone, as you’ll frequently see Charizard cards popping up on lists of the most sought after Pokemon cards.
We’ve even previously taken a look at the most valuable Charizard Pokemon cards specifically!
At $92, it’s around half the value of the number one spot on our list – but that’s still a significant price!
Interestingly, the 151 set features what’s known as ‘demi God’ packs in its Western release; these feature the full evolutions of a Starter Pokemon – so, if you’re lucky enough, you may find this card in one of those packs, alongside full art Charmander and Charmeleon too!
The Japanese release was slightly different, featuring God packs – which we covered in our ‘what is a Pokemon God Pack’ article.
Just like the Mew ex, this card is available in other versions too – so if you’re looking to pick them up to play with instead of collect, standard variants of this card start at a much more reasonable $5!
3. Zapdos ex, 202/165 ($50)
No surprise that we see another Secret Rare popping up on our most valuable Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: 151 cards list!
Zapdos – alongside Moltres and Articuno – is one of the original Legendary Pokemon from the very first Pokemon games.
So it stands to reason that it’d get at least one spectacular card in the 151 set – and it’s this Secret Rare, depicting all three of the original Legendaries in flight, which is the most highly sought after.
There’s other versions of the Zapdos card available, of course – so you won’t have to pay $50 if you’re just after a card to be the centrepiece of an Electric deck (see our Pokemon Energy Types guide for more on this!).
In fact, the cheapest variant of this card can be purchased for around $3!
4. Erika’s Invitation, 203/165 ($48)
Though many Pokemon themselves have been treated to some absolutely gorgeous full art cards in the last few years of Pokemon Trading Card Game sets, Supporter cards have definitely not been left in the dust.
Given that there’s often a bit more creative license to be had when it comes to these cards and the characters they depict, they sometimes end up being among the most visually stunning cards in any given set!
Erika’s Invitation is no exception, with this full art variant of the card featuring a beautiful piece of art.
In gameplay terms, it’s a useful card with an unusual ability too – it allows you to sneak a look at your opponent’s hand, then place a Basic Pokemon you find there on their Bench.
That Pokemon then becomes their Active Pokemon, allowing you the chance to take out – or at least significantly damage – a Basic Pokemon without fear of immediate repercussions.
Plus, it’s a great opportunity for you to take a look at what they may be planning with the cards in their hand too!
Erika’s Invitation may be expensive in this incarnation, but there’s a second full art variant also available that’s around half the price.
It’s also worth noting that the standard version of the card is worth just a few pennies; demonstrating that sometimes, looks really are everything!
5. Blastoise ex, 200/165 ($40)
Have you noticed something else that almost all of the most valuable Pokemon Scarlet and Violet 151 cards have in common so far?
That’s right: Erika’s Invitation aside, they’re all ex versions of Pokemon.
Though they’re often very powerful – with abilities that prove incredibly useful, normally forming the backbone of a deck’s strategy – there’s a bit of a trade off.
That comes with the fact that, when a Pokemon ex is knocked out, it’s worth 2 prize cards instead of one.
So while it’s often tempting – not to mention extremely beneficial – to load your deck and play area with Pokemon ex, it can be pretty risky and lead to a swift loss if you’re not careful!
This gorgeous, full art variant of the Blastoise ex may currently be selling for $40, but $3 is the asking price for the cheapest version of the card.
Most Valuable Japanese Pokemon 151 Cards
1. Pikachu – Master Ball Reverse ($300+)
A card that many overlook, but in fact is one of the most valuable cards in the set is the reverse holo masterball Pikachu.
This is the first set to introduce a super rare reverse foil card type. Typically we have seen Pokeball designs on reverse holo cards, but in this Japanese 151 set, they have featured the Masterball variant, a incredibly rare variant that make the set more exciting… which we didn’t think was possible.
The one card that everyone wants is the infamous Pikachu and loos ecards have started selling for $299.
When and if it gets graded, prices are likely to increase closer to $1,000.
2. Erika’s Invitation SAR ($250+)
The most valuable, and rarest card in the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet 151 set is Erika’s Invitation in Secret Art Rare form.
This card is one of the hardest to pull, and alongside the current trend of female trainer cards being wanted by collectors, it’s being sold for approximately $500.
If you are one of the lucky ones to get this graded, it’s likely this will be priced well above $1,500.
3. Gengar – Master Ball Reverse ($200+)
Another Master Ball reverse holo foil card makes it’s way on the most valuable Pokemon 151 cards!
This time it’s Gengar, with a unique illustrations that some would say looks “off”, but I really dig it, and hte Master Ball holo really pops on this dark purple print.
This card is selling for over $80 in mint condition, and closer to $350 if graded a 10!
4. Mew EX SAR ($120+)
Now putting trainer cards aside and getting to more Pokemon related cards, one of the most wanted cards in the set features Mew, the Pokemon also on the booster box!
This card is very special, not only because it’s Mew but because it features an incredible design that when tilted in the right direction will make the sun look like it’s rising and setting.
Also, the colours are beyond beautiful, and make the whole scene incredibly calming.
This is the card i personally want, but have yet to pull it.
The Mew EX card sells for approximately $225, and graded at a 10, one has sold for over $1,000.
5. Charizard EX SAR ($130+)
When there’s a rare Charizard in a set, you know it’s going to sell well because it’s probably one of the most popular Pokemon of all time, and has a history associated with the most valuable card of all time.
The Charizard that everyone wants in this set is the secret art rare, that features charizrd flying out of a Volcanic alley into the sky, which matches Charmander’s and Charmeleon’s art style too.
This Charizard EX secret art rare sells for over $160, and over $850 when graded a 10.
6. Erika’s Invitation FA ($100+)
Yes, there’s even more Erika cards in the set, this time it’s the full art variant, which in my opinion looks better visually, but the hit rates are higher so… collectors want the secret art instead!
But that said, this card is still one of the most valuable cards in the set.
Erika’s Invitation full art card sells for approximately $260 loose, but can fetch closer to to $1,000 when graded a 10.
7. Zapdos EX SAR ($75+)
One of the most visually stunning cards in the entire set is the full art ex dedicated to the three legendary birds, Zapdos, Moltres and Articuno.
Mainly focusing on Zapdos this EX card is incredibly colourful, and immediately catches your attention when you see it.
This card is being sold for over $110 and around $500 if graded a 10, so this is one to keep an eye on, collectors love it.
8. Mew EX Gold Card ($60+)
It seems like collectors really love Mew, and I don’t blame them, it’s one of my personal favourite Pokemon of all time.
This time, the rare gold card variant can be pulled from this set, and features the big eyed, bright pink legendary Pokemon in full art form.
Many would think the gold card would be higher on this last thanks to the low pull rate, but unfortunately not.
This card is selling for over $100 on eBay, and closer to $500 if you can get it graded a 10!
9. Venasaur EX SAR ($40+)
Returning back to the 3 starter evolutions we have Venasaur, with an incredibly array of colours that just seem to sparkle on this card.
if you are a collector that appreciates Pokemon art, this one should certainly be on your hit list!
Venasaur EX SAR is selling for around $75, or closer to $350 should you be lucky enough to get it graded a 10.
10. Mewtwo – Master Ball Reverse ($70+)
The third Master Ball reverse holo is the infamous Mewtwo, doing the cold stare which I remember from the original movie.
It’s about time we see Mewtwo on this list, seeign as Mew is taking all of the spotlight!
This Mewtwo Master Ball reverse holo card sells for over $70, or $200+ if graded a 10.
11. Blastoise EX SAR ($60+)
Ofcourse, we can’t leave out or big blue boy Blastoise from the list, seeing as Charizard and Venasaur are selling for a pretty penny!
This card is another beautiful card, and kinda goes the complete opposite compared to Venasaur, this card is much more peaceful, minimal and sticks to just a few colour palletes.
This card is selling for over $60, or if you happen to send on off graded and it receives a 10, it’s closer to $250.
