The Pokémon Company have announced the first set for the Pokémon Trading Card Game (or TCG) in 2025: Prismatic Evolutions. What have they revealed so far, and what else do we already know? Let’s find out!

How Many Cards Will Be In the Prismatic Evolutions Set?

This far out from release, all we know is that there are, and this is directly from The Pokémon Company’s announcement, “over 175 cards.” What that’s likely to mean is that there’ll be 175 cards in the base set for Prismatic Evolutions, and an as yet unspecified number of Secret Rares, the vast majority of which will be alternate art and special foil treated variants of cards in the base set.

Secret Rare cards are often the most highly sought after cards in a set; not usually because of what they can do in-game, but because of their beautiful art. Check out the Eevee card above for a good example of the type of artwork you’ll see on Secret Rare cards; that specific card is set to be the Promo card included with each Prismatic Evolutions Elite Trainer Box, so it’s one that fans won’t have to hunt for in booster packs.

Prismatic Evolutions is part of the Scarlet & Violet series of sets for the Pokémon TCG, all of which use the Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet Nintendo Switch video games as their source material.

Why Is the Set Named Prismatic Evolutions?

All English language Pokémon TCG sets are made up of cards that have previously appeared in other Japanese sets, usually a month or two prior to the English set’s release. Sometimes the cards are from more than one set, and quite often we don’t get the same cards as Japanese players do with their equivalent sets anyway.

In the case of Prismatic Evolutions, the set is mostly based on Terastal Festival, a Japanese set which features Eevee and its various evolved forms, known to fans as “Eeveelutions.” In the above image, you can see the Leafeon ex, the Flareon ex, and the Vaporeon ex card from Terastal Festival.

Then we have Glaceon ex, Jolteon ex, and Espeon ex in the above image. That’s six Eeveelutions so far, but fans will know that there are still more in the Pokédex, as well as Eevee itself. You can see the remaining Eeveelutions, Sylveon ex and Umbreon ex, as well as Eevee ex, in the below image.

As you can see, all of these cards are Tera Pokémon; even more excitingly, they’re also classed as Stellar Pokémon, a new type of Pokémon ex card which were introduced in the Stellar Crown set. These cards are powerful versions of Pokémon, but they can be difficult to use due to their attacks requiring multiple types of energy to use.

The Prismatic Evolutions set is due to be released on January 17th, 2025. As with most other sets, it’s highly likely that pre-release events will be held in the week leading up to the official release date, at which fans can get their hands on cards from the Prismatic Evolutions set in advance, and test them out against other players in the process. You can find your local Pokémon TCG pre-release events by using the official Pokémon TCG event locator.
